Ouagadougou Bootcamp Ships New Wave of African Builders
On April 18, 2026, the heart of West Africa flickered with a new kind of energy. Africa Free Routing officially wrapped its intensive Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Ouagadougou, graduating a fresh cohort of engineers capable of building the next generation of “Freedom Tech.”
The week-long sprint didn’t just end with certificates; it ended with a high-stakes mini-hackathon where teams transformed abstract concepts into working Lightning-powered prototypes in a matter of hours.
From Theory to Real-World Code
The bootcamp moved beyond theory, dropping participants into the “deep end” of the Bitcoin software stack. Guided by lead instructors Vladimir Fomene and Olaniran Laurent, students mastered:
Infrastructure Setup: Deploying and managing local Lightning nodes.
Liquidity Management: Understanding the “plumbing” of channels and routing.
Full-Stack Integration: Using Python and JavaScript to bake Lightning payments into real-world business apps.
Open-Source Contribution: Learning how to give back to the global Bitcoin codebase.
The Hackathon: Proving the Protocol
The final day was a showcase of rapid execution. Teams huddled over laptops to solve local frictions, demonstrating that when African builders have the tools, they build context-specific solutions.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated local coordination team—including Megasley, General Manager of Africa Free Routing, Lys from African Bitcoiners, Nzonda Fotsing, and Amar Sore—ensured that despite the technical complexity, the operation ran with surgical precision.
A Growing Continental Network
The Ouagadougou edition is the latest node in a massive educational expansion. Africa Free Routing has now trained over 300 developers through 10+ bootcamps across 7 countries, including major stops in Accra, Nairobi, and Kampala.
