ZEUS Wallet Restores Lightning Addresses After Cybersecurity Incident; Customer Funds Secure as Full Services Resume Soon

DEVELOPMENT LIGHTNING NETWORK PRODUCT

ZEUS, the self-custodial Bitcoin Lightning Network wallet and infrastructure provider, has restored its ZEUS Pay Lightning Addresses following a cybersecurity incident that temporarily took parts of its systems offline on August 5, 2026.

The company confirmed that no customer funds were lost or put at risk. With remaining core services scheduled to return in the coming days.

This update, shared via the official @ZeusLN account on X (formerly Twitter) and the company blog, marks steady progress in recovery just over 36 hours after the initial disruption.

What Happened: The Cybersecurity Incident

On August 5, 2026, ZEUS detected a cybersecurity incident targeting its infrastructure. The attack was mitigated within hours. Out of an abundance of caution, the team kept affected services offline to perform a comprehensive audit of all systems before full restoration.

Founder Evan Kaloudis stated in the official blog post. “Based on our investigation so far, we believe this incident was limited to ZEUS infrastructure. We have no evidence that it resulted from a vulnerability in Lightning node software.” Importantly, ZEUS emphasized that its self-custodial design protected users: “No customer funds were lost. No customer funds are at risk.”

Customers whose Lightning Service Provider (LSP) channels closed during the outage will receive replacement channels. Once services fully resume and requests can be processed.

The incident reinforces ongoing work by ZEUS to strengthen its systems using trusted execution environments (enclaves). And the Validating Lightning Signer project. The company’s upcoming architecture is specifically designed to mitigate this class of attack.

Current Status: Key Services Restored

In an update posted on August 7, 2026 (referencing August 6 developments), ZEUS confirmed:

  • ZEUS Pay Lightning Addresses are back online.
  • ZEUS White, block source, and graph data services remained fully operational throughout the incident.
  • Currency exchange rate services experienced only brief disruptions and are now fully stable.
  • Lightning node and LSP channel services are scheduled to return in the coming days.

ZEUS expressed gratitude to its users and the broader Bitcoin community: “Thank you to our customers and the broader Bitcoin community for the overwhelming support over the past 36 hours. We truly appreciate your patience as we continue restoring services.”

Users whose LSP channels were affected should contact support via the email listed under the Help menu in the ZEUS mobile wallet. The team has requested additional patience as they work through requests.

Why This Matters for Bitcoin Lightning Users?

ZEUS has operated since 2019 as an open-source, self-custodial mobile wallet that lets users run a Lightning node on their phone or connect remotely. Features include ZEUS Pay (reusable Lightning addresses that work even when the phone is offline), LSP services for easy channel management, and enterprise options under ZEUS White.

The self-custodial model proved critical here, users retained direct control of their Bitcoin. Shielding funds even while company infrastructure underwent audit. This stands in contrast to custodial platforms where operator downtime can sometimes create greater exposure.

The event also occurred amid a cluster of temporary disruptions affecting other Lightning-related services earlier in the week. Though ZEUS stressed its investigation found no issues with the underlying Lightning node software itself.

Looking Ahead

ZEUS continues its comprehensive audit and will provide further updates as recovery progresses. The company has previously completed a SOC 2 Type II audit and recently released version 13.0.0 of its wallet with enhanced features. Including a new LDK Node-powered engine.

As the Bitcoin Lightning Network ecosystem matures. Incidents like this underscore both the importance of robust infrastructure hardening and the protective value of true self-custody. ZEUS’s transparent communication and rapid partial restoration of services demonstrate a measured approach focused on long-term user security.
