Tether Opens New Grant Program for African Developers Building Payments Infrastructure

DEVELOPMENT INFRASTUCTURE

Tether has launched a new developer grants program aimed at supporting builders working on local-first AI, peer-to-peer communication, and payment infrastructure tools.

According to the official announcement, the initiative is designed to support developers building open technologies that can improve financial access, communication, and infrastructure resilience in emerging markets.

The company said developers can receive between $1,500 and $4,000 per task completed, with payments available in both Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Focus on Open Infrastructure and Local-First Tools

Tether said the program specifically encourages developers building:

  • local-first AI applications
  • peer-to-peer communication tools
  • payment infrastructure
  • Wallet Development Kit (WDK) integrations
  • self-custodial financial tools

The company described the initiative as part of broader efforts to support open and decentralized infrastructure that can operate across different local market conditions.

Growing Interest in African Developer Ecosystems

The announcement could attract growing interest from African developers already building Bitcoin, Lightning, and financial access tools across the continent.

In recent years, African developers have increasingly participated in open-source Bitcoin development, payment infrastructure projects, and self-custodial wallet ecosystems tied to financial inclusion and peer-to-peer payments.

The new grants program adds to broader global interest in supporting practical infrastructure development within emerging markets.
