Btrust Builders Announces 2026 Open-Source Fellowship for Bitcoin and Lightning Developers

OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Btrust Builders, the initiative training the next generation of open-source Bitcoin and Lightning developers from Africa, today announced the launch of its 2026 Open-Source Fellowship.

The selective 12-week, part-time program runs from August 24 to November 13, 2026, with a formal kick-off on Monday, August 24.

It is designed to help high-performing developers move from technical learning to meaningful, real-world contributions in the Bitcoin open-source ecosystem.

Building on Proven Impact from the First Bootcamp

Last year, Btrust Builders ran its inaugural four-week Open Source Bootcamp. The program welcomed 38 developers from Nigeria, Kenya, Bénin, Uganda, Malawi, Ghana, and Brazil. Participants achieved strong results:
  • More than 100 code submissions.
  • Contributions to over eight Bitcoin open-source projects.
  • 12 pull requests submitted (including three to Bitcoin Core).
  • Six code reviews completed.
  • Five new issues reported.
Many graduates secured fully funded open-source careers or launched their own projects. That success directly inspired the expanded fellowship.

What Fellows Will Learn and Build?

The 2026 cohort consists of top performers from Btrust Builders’ 2026 Pathways programs.

Fellows will receive a stipend throughout the program and follow a structured three-month progression:

  1. Month 1: Bitcoin and Lightning Protocols — Fellows deepen their understanding of Bitcoin’s security model, SegWit, mining, peer-to-peer networking, Script, wallets, payment channels, HTLCs, routing, liquidity, and the future of Lightning through self-directed study, partnerships, and group discussions.
  2. Month 2: Open-Source Practice and Bitcoin Core Participants set up Bitcoin Core, explore its architecture, read code and tests, trace RPC commands, practice debugging, and learn contributor guidelines, review culture, and collaborative workflows.
  3. Month 3: Project Selection and Contribution — Fellows choose a Bitcoin or Lightning open-source project, work with mentors, write design documents, claim issues, develop and test solutions, submit pull requests, respond to maintainer feedback, and build a public proof-of-work portfolio.
Btrust Builders launches its 12-week 2026 Open-Source Fellowship (Aug 24–Nov 13) with stipends, mentorship, and real Bitcoin Core/Lightning contributions for top African developers.

Collaborative Learning Structure

Fellows work in small homegroups of four to five people for regular discussions and peer reviews. In the first month they are paired with study partners from other groups. From month three onward they receive focused one-on-one mentorship.

The program also includes faculty office hours, weekly standups, maintainer conversations, and feedback sessions.

By the end of the fellowship, participants will have a public portfolio of code contributions, technical writing, reviews, and maintainer engagement, clear evidence of what they can deliver in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Why the Program Matters?

Entering Bitcoin open source can feel intimidating. New contributors often struggle to choose projects, find suitable issues, approach maintainers, write strong pull requests, or turn a first contribution into ongoing work.

The fellowship provides the time, structure, community, and mentorship needed to bridge that gap.

“Our first bootcamp showed us what is possible in four weeks,” the Btrust Builders announcement stated. The 2026 fellowship gives participants twelve weeks to go deeper, contribute more meaningfully, and build a stronger foundation for continued work in the ecosystem.”

How to Join Future Cohorts?

The 2026 Open-Source Fellowship is invitation-only for current Pathways top performers. Developers interested in future opportunities should apply to upcoming Btrust Builders Pathways programs, which serve as the primary on-ramp.

Applications remain open year-round for mid-to-senior software engineers ready to transition into Bitcoin open-source development.
