Africa Free Routing Concludes 11th Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Kampala, Uganda
Africa Free Routing has successfully wrapped up its 11th Lightning Developer Bootcamp, held in Kampala, Uganda, marking another step forward in efforts to scale Bitcoin and Lightning development capacity across the continent.
The Kampala edition brought together a new cohort of developers, engineers, and technically inclined Bitcoin enthusiasts from across East Africa and beyond. Over several days, participants engaged in hands-on, deeply technical sessions focused on building and understanding Lightning Network infrastructure.
The bootcamp forms part of Africa Free Routing’s broader initiative to cultivate a distributed network of skilled Lightning developers capable of contributing to open-source projects and supporting real-world Bitcoin payment systems.
The bootcamp was delivered in collaboration with local ecosystem groups including Gorilla Sats, BitDevs Kampala, and Bitcoin Kmapala Uganda, reflecting a coordinated effort to grow technical Bitcoin capacity in East Africa.
Deep Dive Into Lightning Infrastructure and Payments
Unlike introductory Bitcoin workshops, the Kampala bootcamp maintained a strong emphasis on practical engineering and infrastructure-level understanding.
Participants worked through technical modules covering:
- Lightning node setup and management
- Payment channel mechanics and liquidity strategies
- Routing optimization and fee dynamics
- Lightning service integration for real-world applications
- Security considerations for node operators and developers
The sessions were designed to move beyond theory, enabling attendees to interact directly with Lightning implementations and gain experience building systems that can support scalable Bitcoin payments.
Hackathon Showcases Real-World Lightning Use Cases
A key highlight of the bootcamp was the final hackathon and demo presentations, where participants collaborated in teams to develop Lightning-powered solutions tailored to African contexts.
Projects presented during the demo session explored: Merchant payment tools, Micropayment applications, Cross-border payment solutions, Lightning-enabled financial services.
Organizers noted that many of the projects demonstrated increasing technical maturity, with several teams building functional prototypes capable of further development beyond the bootcamp.
Backed by Global and Local Bitcoin Ecosystem
The Kampala edition was supported by several Bitcoin-focused organizations, including Tether, OpenSats, Human Rights Foundation (HRF), PlanB Network, and African Bitcoiners, highlighting growing alignment between global funding bodies and grassroots African initiatives.
Organizers noted that continued collaboration between local communities and international supporters remains key to expanding Bitcoin development and infrastructure across the continent.
