Btrust Awards $904,000 in First Round of 2026 Bitcoin Developer Education Grants
Btrust, the non-profit dedicated to decentralizing Bitcoin development in Africa and the Global Majority, has announced the first round of its 2026 Bitcoin developer education grants.
The organization is awarding a total of $904,000 to five education initiatives that help developers move from learning about Bitcoin to making real contributions to open-source projects.
The recipients are Hack4Freedom, Summer of Bitcoin, Bitshala, Vinteum, and the integrated Librería de Satoshi & B4OS programs. Each initiative differs in structure, region, and audience, yet all share the same goal. Making Bitcoin development more accessible and building stronger pathways for new contributors.
Why These Grants Matter?
Bitcoin’s open-source ecosystem still faces a geographic imbalance. Many skilled developers in Africa and the broader Global Majority want to contribute but encounter real barriers. Limited local technical communities, fewer mentors, reduced access to real projects, and scarce funding that allows deep work.
Education programs close this gap. The strongest ones teach fundamentals, introduce tools and repositories, pair learners with mentors, help them produce proof-of-work. And guide them toward their first meaningful contributions.
Over time, these learners can become regular contributors, grantees, maintainers, educators, and full-time Bitcoin developers. Btrust’s education grants support exactly this long-term pipeline.
The Grant Recipients
- Hack4Freedom: A female-focused Bitcoin hackathon and developer education program for software developers and aspiring engineers in the Global Majority. It began in Kaduna, Nigeria, and is expanding to more cities in 2026, starting with Lagos. The Lagos edition brought together 38 women and produced 13 repository-backed open-source projects. Each two-week hybrid program combines workshops, mentorship, and project-based learning centered on Bitcoin, Lightning, Nostr, and eCash.
- Summer of Bitcoin: A global online education and internship program that introduces university students to Bitcoin open-source development and design. Since 2021, the program has received more than 40,000 applications from 74 countries and onboarded over 280 developers. Its 2025 edition attracted 5,036 applications from 71 countries in just 15 days. Sixty-eight interns from nine countries then worked with 32 Bitcoin organizations, contributed to more than 86 repositories, and submitted 413 pull requests. It remains one of the largest pipelines bringing young, globally distributed talent into Bitcoin free and open-source software (FOSS).
- Bitshala: A Bitcoin developer education community based in India that helps developers learn, collaborate, and contribute to open-source Bitcoin projects. Its offerings include study cohorts, weekly clubs, fellowships, starter grants, meetups, builder retreats, public conferences, and community support. Btrust has approved Bitshala for long-term support, giving the program the stability needed to plan ahead and consistently grow India’s Bitcoin open-source developer pipeline.
- Vinteum: A Bitcoin research and development center focused on growing open-source talent in Brazil and Latin America. Vinteum combines education, mentorship, grants, research, and community infrastructure through programs such as the Bitcoin Dev Launchpad, fellowships, long-term grants, technical seminars, workshops, BitDevs meetups, and its physical developer hub (Casa Vinteum). Alumni now contribute to projects including BTCPay Server, Floresta, Bitcoin Dev Kit, Bitcoinfuzz, Boltz, Stratum V2, and others.
- Librería de Satoshi & B4OS: An integrated Spanish-speaking Bitcoin education ecosystem. Librería de Satoshi provides foundational technical education, while B4OS supports more advanced developers as they progress toward open-source contribution, mentorship, portfolio building, and full-time Bitcoin work. Together they have built one of the strongest Spanish-language developer pipelines in Latin America. Participants have contributed to Bitcoin Core, Mostro P2P, Bitcoin Dev Kit, SimLN, SeedSigner, Silent Payments, and additional projects. Both programs have also received long-term support approval from Btrust.
