Why It Matters for Africa’s Bitcoin Builders
Block’s campaign validates an approach that African Bitcoin builders have been practising for years. Every circular economy in Kibera, Mossel Bay, Githurai, Kimbo, and Winteko already runs on the principle that Bitcoin is something you use, not something you watch. The difference is that Block is now spending significant marketing dollars to communicate that message to hundreds of millions of people who have not yet made the connection.
For African projects building merchant payment tools, from Tando in Kenya to MoneyBadger in South Africa to BitSpenda across West Africa, a global campaign that normalises Bitcoin as a payment method rather than a speculative asset creates a tailwind. Block says more than 24 million Cash App users have been onboarded into Bitcoin since 2018. The “Bitcoin Does” campaign extends that effort to people who have not yet used Bitcoin, while linking consumer payments through Cash App, merchant acceptance through Square, and self-custody through BitKey hardware under one brand system.
