Bitcoin P2P Hackathon in Bujumbura Delivers 10 Working Prototypes: 30 Builders Advance Financial Sovereignty in Burundi
In a landmark display of grassroots Bitcoin innovation, 30 developers and builders in Burundi have successfully completed a two-day Bitcoin P2P hackathon. Producing 10 fully functional prototypes focused on decentralized Lightning Network tools and no-KYC peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading.
Organized by BitDevs Gitega in collaboration with Vexl and Africa Free Routing’s Lightning Bootcamp initiatives, the event emphasized real-world building: no intermediaries, no gatekeepers, and complete user control over financial infrastructure.
Two Days of Hands-On Bitcoin P2P Development
The hackathon followed practical sessions from the Bujumbura Lightning Developer Bootcamp and two prior P2P-focused hackathons. Participants dove deep into privacy-preserving Bitcoin tools, guided by mentors from the local developer community.Key focus areas included:
- Exploring Vexl, an open-source mobile app for private peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading without KYC.
- Managing personal Lightning nodes.
- Integrating Lightning APIs for real-world applications.
The result? Every one of the 10 teams shipped a working prototype. Projects featured:
- Polar simulations for running multi-node Lightning networks locally.
- LND + LNbits integrations.
- OpenMMLN API consumption.
- Full self-custody Bitcoin and Lightning node management.
Demo Day & Pitch Competition: 10 Demos, 2 Winners
On Monday, June 8, teams presented their solutions during a lively Demo Day and Pitch Competition. Each group demonstrated clear technical progress and a strong understanding of financial sovereignty.

Two teams were selected as winners for their outstanding contributions to P2P Bitcoin trading solutions built directly on the Vexl platform.

By focusing on open-source tools and self-sovereign infrastructure, participants are creating financial systems designed by Africans for Africans—reducing reliance on centralized exchanges and intermediaries.
