The Remarkable Journey of Brindon Mwiine

AFRICAN BITCOINERS

In the summer of 2023, Brindon Mwiine was a grassroots educator with a massive vision but a major hurdle. As the founder of Bitcoin Kampala, he had earned a community-voted ticket to BTC Prague, but the costs of travel, lodging, and a complex visa process stood in his way.

As highlighted in a recent retrospective by Geyser Fund, what followed wasn’t just a travel story—it was a global demonstration of the Bitcoin network’s power to empower the individual.

The 24-Hour Spark

Brindon turned to Geyser, the Bitcoin-native crowdfunding platform, to bridge the gap. The global community responded with “Proof of Work” intensity: 34 donors funded his entire trip in just 24 hours. Despite the stress of his first international flight and a last-minute visa approval, Brindon arrived in Prague on the morning of the event. He didn’t go to observe; he went to absorb the tools necessary to build a self-sovereign future for Uganda.

Scaling the Circular Economy: From Juice to Tuition

The real impact began the moment Brindon touched back down in Entebbe. Energized by the global Bitcoin family, he turned Bitcoin Kampala into a laboratory for real-world utility:

  • Juicy B: He established Uganda’s first Bitcoin-only juice shop, proving that local merchants could bypass predatory banking fees and inflation by using the Lightning Network.

  • Education for Sats: In a landmark move for adoption, Brindon began onboarding vendors at Makerere University, allowing students to pay for essential services and tuition in Satoshis.

  • The Bitcoin Model School: Moving beyond simple meetups, he began collaborating with local educators to build Africa’s first Bitcoin-integrated school, combining traditional curriculum with financial literacy.

Orphans of Uganda: Transforming the Orphanage

The most moving chapter of Brindon’s journey involves a local orphanage that has become a cornerstone of his mission. Through transparent Bitcoin donations—often facilitated via Geyser—the community has provided:

  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Funding for solar power installations and clean water.

  • Essential Needs: Food, beds, and healthcare for over 70 children.

  • Crisis Prevention: On multiple occasions, “Sats” sent from around the world prevented school closures and kept the children in a safe learning environment.

A Legacy of Global Connection

Brindon’s work has since rippled across the border to seed Bitcoin Arusha in Tanzania and has been featured on major platforms like the Once Bitten! podcast. He has become a leading voice at international events like Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town, where he advocates for bottom-up, grassroots growth over top-down marketing.

As Geyser Fund noted in their 2026 reflection, Brindon is the living embodiment of Bitcoin’s promise. His journey from a crowdfunded flight to a continental leader proves that when a mission-driven builder asks for support, the network delivers.

In Brindon’s own words: “Without Geyser, a lot of things would be different… Bitcoin is Hope. I’m the evidence.”
