The Surfer Kids of Mossel Bay Qualify for 2026 South Africa Junior Championships
Saturday morning excitement filled the air at Diaz Beach as The Surfer Kids Non-Profit announced big news for their junior team.
The organization confirmed that several of its young surfers have qualified for the 2026 SA Junior Championships.
The team, known affectionately as the Sharks, shared the update on social media with clear pride: “Saturday morning and the Sharks are AMPED Big news, our team has qualified for the SA Championships! ”
Qualified Surfers by Age Group
The successful qualifiers are:
- Under 16: Inam, Alfonso and Azo.
- Under 14: Letabo and Tebogo.
- Under 12: Ave (as a reserve, but still heading to the national event).
These results come after consistent daily training and competition experience. The Surfer Kids emphasized that the children’s hard work is now showing on the national stage.

Founded in 2010 in Mossel Bay on the Southern Cape, The Surfer Kids is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO 136-987) and Public Benefit Organisation. Its mission is the empowerment of marginalized and impoverished youths through character-building activities. That teach commitment and dedication. Surfing serves as the primary medium.
The programme runs a core surf schedule five days a week from its permanent headquarters at Diaz Beach (opened in 2016). It is fully donation-funded and receives ongoing support from partners including Bitcoin Ekasi and Unravel Surf Travel.
The organisation focuses on children from local townships who would otherwise have limited access to the sport.
Path to the National Stage
The 2026 SA Junior Championships are scheduled for Jeffreys Bay from 29 September to 3 October. Qualification reflects strong performances on the South African Junior Surf Tour (SAST) and regional events throughout the year.
Many of these young athletes have already gained experience at events such as the Grommet Games, Rip Curl GromSearch and local Surfer Kids Surf Series competitions.
Recent highlights include individual medals and national squad exposure for some team members.

After the announcement, the group planned to celebrate with a local surf session. The organisation expressed clear pride in the team’s progress: “These kids work hard every single day and it’s showing. So proud of this team.”
