Africa Free Routing has officially launched its highly anticipated Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Kisumu. Specifically, the intensive program drew a record-breaking turnout of over 90 participants on its first day. This massive gathering represents one of the largest developer bootcamps hosted by the organization. Consequently, it underscores the surging interest in Bitcoin infrastructure development across East Africa.
An Intensive Five-Day Curriculum
The educational program runs from June 8 to June 12, 2026. Primarily, it aims to equip local developers and builders with practical technical skills. Participants gain hands-on experience setting up their own Bitcoin Core nodes. Furthermore, they are exploring real-world applications for fast, low-cost Bitcoin payments tailored to African contexts.
Highlights From Day One
The bootcamp opened with essential sessions on the historical properties of money. Instructors explained the core financial problems that Bitcoin solves. Crucially, these concepts are vital for African economies facing high inflation and remittance frictions.
Afterward, the attendees quickly transitioned into technical coding work. Lead instructor @dzeg5 guided the participants through an insightful first day. The entire event takes place at Zone01Kisumu, which provides excellent facilities for the builders.
Additionally, the team demonstrated practical tools like KnowledgeBit during the session. This is a Lightning-powered educational tool built during a previous bootcamp in Kampala. Currently, the second day of training is already underway with high momentum.
A Growing Pan-African Mission
Africa Free Routing actively promotes Lightning Network adoption across the entire continent. Their primary mission is enabling local businesses to accept Bitcoin payments cheaply.
Previously, they hosted impact-driven sessions in Nairobi, Cape Town, Cotonou, Kaduna, and Bujumbura. Many alumni from those programs now contribute directly to open-source projects. Therefore, this new Kisumu cohort will further expand Africa’s localized routing network.
