Africa Free Routing Kicks Off Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Addis Ababa Today

Africa Free Routing is in Ethiopia. Today, July 27, 2026, the organisation kicks off its Addis Ababa Lightning Developer Bootcamp at WeVentures Hub, Airport Road, Addis Ababa. The five-day intensive runs through July 31, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EAT daily.

The bootcamp brings together developers for five days of learning, building, collaborating, and exploring Bitcoin and Lightning development. Furthermore, the timing is significant. Ethiopia is not just a new city on Africa Free Routing’s map. Specifically, it is the continent’s 8th largest Bitcoin mining country, holding roughly 2.7% of the global Bitcoin network hashrate. As a result, bringing Lightning developer training to Addis Ababa connects the builder pipeline directly to the country with the most Bitcoin-active energy infrastructure in Africa.

Why Addis Ababa, and why now

Ethiopia’s Bitcoin story has, until now, been primarily a mining story. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) generates surplus hydroelectric power that miners convert into hashrate. Companies like BitFuFu, BIT Mining, and Munich International Mining have all set up operations in the country. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government itself is pursuing state-level Bitcoin mining partnerships through Ethiopian Investment Holdings.

However, mining is only one layer of the Bitcoin stack. The layer above it — Lightning development, merchant tooling, wallet integration, and payment infrastructure — has been largely absent from Ethiopia’s Bitcoin narrative. Therefore, today’s bootcamp represents something new. Specifically, it brings the builder layer to a country that has so far contributed mostly at the infrastructure level.

Furthermore, Ethiopia matters geographically. Addis Ababa sits at the centre of East Africa, making it a natural hub for developers from neighbouring countries including Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Therefore, the talent seeded in this bootcamp could spread across the entire Horn of Africa region.

What participants will learn

The five-day curriculum follows Africa Free Routing’s proven bootcamp structure. Throughout the bootcamp, participants will gain hands-on experience with:

  • Bitcoin fundamentals — the history and properties of money, why Bitcoin exists, and how it works from the ground up.
  • Lightning development — building on Bitcoin’s Layer 2 payment network.
  • Hands-on coding workshops — writing real code, not just watching demonstrations.
  • Real-world application building — shipping projects that solve actual problems.
  • Open-source collaboration — learning how to contribute to Bitcoin open-source projects.
  • Networking with fellow builders — connecting with developers from across Ethiopia and the region.

Day one typically covers Bitcoin fundamentals and hands-on interaction with a Bitcoin Core node. By day three, participants are building and testing Lightning applications using real SDKs. The bootcamp closes on day five with a hackathon, where participants build and demo real projects in front of the cohort.

In short, this is not a lecture series. It is a build environment. Participants leave with working code, not just notes.

The broader Africa Free Routing footprint

The Addis Ababa edition adds Ethiopia to a growing list of countries where Africa Free Routing has delivered Lightning developer training. Previous bootcamps have run in Nairobi, Uyo, Kaduna, Accra, Lusaka, Cotonou, Cape Town, Ouagadougou, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kisumu, and Bujumbura.

Notably, the Kisumu edition in June 2026 welcomed a record-breaking 90 or more participants, making it one of the largest bootcamps Africa Free Routing has hosted to date. Furthermore, that edition drew support from Btrust, the Human Rights Foundation, Tether Africa, African Bitcoiners, and Plan B Network.

The Addis Ababa bootcamp continues that momentum. Specifically, it lands in a country where Bitcoin is already part of the national economic conversation at the highest levels. Therefore, the developers trained this week are entering an ecosystem primed for the builder layer they are about to learn.

Ethiopia's Lightning gap

Ethiopia’s Bitcoin mining sector generates revenue, attracts foreign direct investment, and earns the country international recognition. However, mining and spending are different activities. A country can mine Bitcoin without its population ever transacting in it.

That gap is exactly what Lightning developer education addresses. Specifically, developers trained in Lightning can build the wallets, payment integrations, and merchant tools that turn mined Bitcoin into circulating Bitcoin. Therefore, the Addis Ababa bootcamp is not just a training event. It is an early step toward connecting Ethiopia’s mining infrastructure to a functional local Bitcoin economy.

The precedent exists elsewhere on the continent. In Kenya, Lightning developer training fed directly into the circular economies now running in Kibera. In South Africa, merchant tooling built by local developers powers Bitcoin acceptance across hundreds of thousands of locations. In Nigeria, bootcamp graduates contribute to open-source Bitcoin projects and run local BitDevs chapters.

Ethiopia now has the same opportunity. And it starts today, at WeVentures Hub on Airport Road, where a new cohort of developers is taking their first steps into the Lightning stack.
