What is BitDevs?
BitDevs is a community-driven initiative that originated in New York City in 2013. It was created to provide a high-signal, “Bitcoin-only” environment where developers, engineers, and researchers could discuss the technical nuances of the protocol without the noise of marketing or price speculation.
The hallmark of BitDevs is the Socratic Seminar. In this format, a moderator presents a curated list of recent Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs), security disclosures, and technical research papers. The floor is then open for a peer-to-peer discussion where participants “debug” the ideas together. There are no “experts” at the front of the room—only a community of peers committed to the “Don’t Trust, Verify” ethos.
BitDevs in Africa: A Growing Movement
While BitDevs started in the US, its most explosive recent growth has been across the African continent. Chapters are now active and thriving in cities including:
Lagos & Abuja
Nairobi, Kenya
Accra, Ghana
Kampala, Uganda
Johannesburg, South Africa
These meetups have become the R&D labs for the continent, where local engineers brainstorm how to adapt Lightning Network payments for local commerce and build resilient infrastructure against currency volatility.
The Btrust Connection
The launch of BitDevs Ethiopia is made possible through the strategic support of Btrust. Rather than just funding events, Btrust acts as the institutional backbone for the African developer pipeline.
For the Addis Ababa tech community, this Thursday is more than just a meetup; it’s an invitation to take a seat at the global table of Bitcoin development.
