A Bitcoin-funded school in rural Bugiri, Uganda, has gained recognition for its community-led development model. Specifically, Starlight Elementary School now serves over 100 children with four newly constructed classroom blocks. The project organizers funded the entire development using Bitcoin. Consequently, the initiative stands as a practical example of a local circular economy.
From a Crowdfunding Campaign to Global Action
The project began in May 2023 when organizer Brindon Mwiine launched a crowdfunding campaign. Specifically, he raised 5.9 million sats on the Geyser Fund platform to attend a conference. While at the BTC Prague conference, global leaders challenged him to bring Bitcoin utility home. Therefore, he returned to Uganda to find a community facing severe economic hardships.
Mwiine focused his efforts on Bugiri after connecting with the Orphans of Uganda orphanage. At the time, the local Starlight Elementary School faced imminent closure by district inspectors. However, the project team did not immediately buy the facility. Instead, they signed a memorandum of understanding to manage the school for 18 months.
Building a Circular Economy with Sats
After building local trust, the organization officially acquired the property title. Subsequently, workers constructed four new classroom blocks on the campus. Project leaders paid for all building materials entirely in Bitcoin.
Furthermore, older students received payments in sats for their construction labor on the site. A local muralist also joined the campus to paint the new structures. By February 2026, the completely renovated school officially opened its doors with a staff of 22 people.
Documentation and Project Media
The organizers shared several media resources to document this multi-year journey. Interested readers can watch The Pitch Video to see the original campaign.
Additionally, a Before Video captures the early conditions of the campus. Viewers can also watch the After Video to see the finished facility. For a deeper look, read the full story on the Official Project Post.
