Bitcoin Ekasi Launches “Tribe of 21” Curated Expeditions

EVENTS ADOPTION

Bitcoin isn’t just being stacked in South African townships. Instead, people are spending, teaching, and living it every day. Now, the pioneering Bitcoin Ekasi project is inviting the world to experience this reality firsthand. They are launching “Tribe of 21,” a series of 10-day Bitcoin immersion tours starting in May 2026.

Six Bitcoin Circular Economies, One Epic Road Trip

The project organized this tour in partnership with Unravel Surf Travel, a Bitcoin-native South African adventure operator. However, the Tribe of 21 is far more than a vacation. It functions as a rolling Bitcoin circular economy on wheels. Specifically, a private bus carries up to 21 participants along 1,500 km of the scenic Garden Route. The journey stops at six active Bitcoin communities where sats serve as the everyday currency.

“This is what Bitcoin looks like outside your screen,” Bitcoin Ekasi posted on X. “It is not just a tour. It is a curated experience at the edge of Africa. We have designed everything with intention, including surf, culture, wildlife, and Bitcoin.”

The itinerary blends adventure tourism with real-world Bitcoin adoption:

  • Day 2: Start in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township at Bitcoin Loxion. Visitors walk the Lightning Network hub and explore the Wall of Curiosity. Afterward, you can spend sats at a local spaza shop before enjoying a champagne catamaran cruise.

  • Day 4–6: Head east to Bitcoin Witsand and Bitcoin Ekasi in Mossel Bay. This area represents the heart of the project. Here, participants visit the Bitcoin Ekasi Center and pay with Lightning at painted-shack stores. Furthermore, you can tour TM Ndanda Primary School and surf with The Surfer Kids.

  • Day 8: Continue to Bitcoin Plettenberg Bay and Bitcoin Sedgefield. These stops focus on market spending and merchant onboarding.

  • Day 9: Travel inland to Bitcoin Karoo in De Rust for lunch. Consequently, you will visit the ancient Cango Caves and dramatic mountain passes.

Throughout the trip, guests enjoy beachfront hotels and professional surf sessions. Additionally, the package includes a full-day safari to spot lions and elephants. Evenings are filled with Lightning transactions and deep conversations over epic dinners.

From Surfing to Financial Sovereignty

Bitcoin Ekasi is an extension of The Surfer Kids. This registered non-profit has empowered township youth through surfing since 2010. Since 2021, the project has paid all staff salaries 100% in Bitcoin. They also onboarded local merchants so coaches and families can live entirely on sats. This creates a living model inspired by Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador.

Every Tribe of 21 transaction directly supports these grassroots efforts. As the organizers emphasize, “You vote with your wallet, and every transaction accelerates the revolution.”
